N-Butyric Acid

Butyric acid is a short-chain organic acid obtained through a biotechnological fermentation process, used in boilies as a powerful olfactory agent and palatability modulator due to its specific, intense, and persistent smell. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic penetrating odor that is easy to recognize. It can be detected by carp at very low doses, helping the bait to be located faster, including in difficult conditions such as a silty bottom or murky water.

Butyric acid is also an ingredient used in the formulation of flavors; a well-known example is Scopex. Its low molecular weight and high solubility contribute to rapid dispersion in water. The product has good thermal stability (over 150°C), so it can be used in boiled boilies with reduced losses during heat processing.

It appears as a clear liquid with a strong, rancid smell, frequently associated with fermentation or protein breakdown. In a feeding context, this type of chemical signal is typical of environments rich in organic matter and degrading food sources that carp actively explore. Therefore, at controlled doses, butyric acid can intensify investigative behavior and support bait acceptance.
